Well, I’ll tell you, the Soberanes fire has left me a little jumpy. So when a fire broke out yesterday afternoon on Saddle Mountain, just up the hill from Carmel River Ranch, I began loading horses for evacuation. Cal Fire representatives turned me around, however, telling me that I have lots of defensible space and that my evacuation process would clog the road. So I sat tight and watched the firefighters do their thing. I could see the flames and hear them crackling. Within about half an hour, the fire was out and crews were mopping up. For awhile, it seemed like a war zone with planes and helicopters flying continually over the ranch. The horses, initially jumpy, soon became bored with the process. I was so impressed with the firefighting effort and how quickly they responded, bringing in bombers from Hollister within minutes. Thank you for all the offers of help and stabling. Had I needed to evacuate, I think I could have done it quite quickly. We have a great community. Phew!!
Apparently, the fire was caused by a downed power line.
